Star Wars

Star Wars is an American epic space franchise, centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away." The science fiction franchise comprised of movies, books, comics, video games, toys, and animated shows. Star Wars has become part of mainstream popular culture, as well as being one of the highest-grossing series of all time. Unlike other sci-fi/fantasy films Star Wars has a strong mythic quality alongside its political and scientific elements. It's heroes are also not militaristic types, but romantic individuals. The saga follows the struggles between the light and the dark, democracy and dictatorship. It portrays a world full of creative situations that face the same themes of problems we do. It has captured  the minds of generations, because of its unique characters and some how a very relate able theme. Like the ones who understand the force, we must trust ourselves and our instincts. We have to be able to be confident in ourselves and what we know to lead us through life, sometimes we will be wrong but that is when we have to accept our mistake(s) and the help of others. We will all have to make tough decisions, whither its to the dark side or the light, and we have to be ready to make the best decision for ourselves. Like the Jedi, we shouldn't let ourselves be seduced by the things in life that can change who we are. Even though the Star Wars saga makes being on the dark side bad *ss, they never win as much as the light. Those on the dark side live a lonely life with no family or the feeling of  love, they live to destroy and inevitably they destroy themselves. They chose (mainly the Siths) to get ride of the pains that come with life. For example Anakin Skywalker chose the dark side, because he didn't want to face the pain of losing his wife. After his decision he lost his wife and children, becomes more robotic than human and a very hated man. It just goes to show that you will have a better chance at a good life by living your destiny, which includes ups and downs rather than choosing the easy way out.

Gatorade

This is a printed ad for Gatorade's chews. Gatorade has always been the sports drink and bars athletes go to, but they have expanded past drinks and bars an into chews. They are the pregame, the during the game, and after item for most athletes. There nothing special about it, it tastes and does the same thing other sports drinks fulfill. The only thing that makes it dominate over other sports drinks is the fact that because of its advertising everyone just goes for the sports product with the G. Gatorade has become known for providing athletes with the energy to be great. Even it's logo has a bolt of electricity on the middle of the G. Most of its ads stress the matter of energy and power that is given to the famous athletes that are in their ads. They make people believe that to become great like the athletes on the ads, like the one above, you should drink and eat Gatorade products. Not only does Gatorade's commercials separate them from other sport drink brands, but also the items sold in the ads. Instead of just selling drinks like other companies Gatorade sells chews, bars, and bottles. It has become more than a sports drink company. It has expanded into the most sold product athletes drink and eat, all thanks to its advertising. It's ads and marketing has enabled Gatorade to dominate all other sports drinks and foods companies.

Better For It by Nike

Nike's new "Better For It" ad campaign is all about women finding motivation when that sneaky little voice starts telling them that they can't do it. I'm glad see a commercial that reminds us that everyone has insecurities and can be nervous to put yourself out there. It reminds women that the only thing holding us back is the fact that we care so much about what people think of us, and that causes us to criticize ourselves even more. We can be our own worst enemies, and we should stop blaming others for being stifled by our own insecurities. The only thing holding hold you back is yourself.
Nike says the campaign is meant to support and motivate women's athletic journeys. It's about "powering women to be better through services, product innovation and athlete inspiration, motivating each other to push to the next level," said the company. Nike is trying to get women into gyms and fitness classes, so that women a) can live healthy lives b) get women in the end to thank Nike for motivating them to go get healthy and c) Nike knows that most women "need" the essential clothing and equipment to workout in, so there first stop in the athletic journey would be Nike.
"The Better For It" campaign was definitely a home run for Nike. It  was able to reach out to women in a completely new way. It was able to motivate women to stop listening to the negative voice inside them and go do what they want to.

Response to Orwell on Question number 1

George Orwell argues against the "belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes." I agree with Orwell that we use language selfishly and to our own benefit. When we are young language is more natural, but once we understand what it can do for us we shape for our own being. We learn how to use it, what tone to use for certain situations, how to make others confused, and ultimately to get what we want. These characteristics is what make makes it unnatural. The definition of natural states that something is natural by existing in or caused by nature, not by humankind. Language is most definitely touched and in Orwell's opinion destroyed by humankind. It is no longer a natural thing, it is in existence for our own use. Even Shakespeare created words to get his own meaning across in his writing. Orwell is right language is not a natural growth, but an instrument which we shape for our own purposes.

Caitlyn Jenner and Vanity Fair

In July 2015 for the first ever the Vanity Fair cover girl was actually born a boy. Bruce Jenner may have broken the Internet more than his step-daughter Kim Kardashian, by telling the world to call him "Caitlyn." The world was shocked to hear that the Olympian Bruce Jenner has been living with a lie his whole life. Immediately after the realize of the Vanity Fair article, Caitlyn gained massive support from people everywhere. She has become the most famous trans woman in the world, giving her a massive global platform.
Many hoped that Caitlyn would use her celebrity power to help the many thousands of embattled transgender people, but she hasn't. Caitlyn entered the community with the lack of any recognition for the work that had gone into trying to end the confusion over gender pronouns. To many in the community she sent their progress back and many want her to give back. She can afford anything she needs, so I think she needs to put some of the money back into the transgender community. For years transgender people have been abused and battered, yet she has not used any of her power to help them. Her Vanity Fair cover captured the fact that her transition story is very different from other people. Throughout the whole article she is swathed in designer clothes against a backdrop of her multi-million dollar Malibu home and an eighteen million dollar Porsche, sets up a stark contrast with the known experiences of a transgender person. Some transgender people say the she has live a very "easy" transition compared to anyone else in the community. Many want her to show us that she is just like anyone else and does struggle at times. For her to actually be able to talk about the experiences of transgender people she needs to experience them herself. She is not going to be able to change people outside the communities mind without moving out of her comfort zone. Caitlyn needs to show the world part of herself that doesn't need millions of dollars.
